Picture4memberJesuit Refugee Service Malta (JRS) was set up in 1993, as part of a larger international organisation – JRS International, to support the first arrival of asylum seekers to the island from crisis areas in the Mediterranean and Eastern Europe, mainly from Iraq and Bosnia. Although the situation is now very different, with asylum seekers and forcibly displaced people arriving mostly by boat from the African coast, JRS Malta continues to respond to existing needs.
JRS Malta advocates for the rights of asylum seekers, organizes awareness-raising activities in schools and community centres, and provides information, legal assistance, social work services and pastoral care to asylum seekers and forced migrants in detention and in the community.
